Real Time Weather Observation: Mossel Bay (14 April 2011 18h00 SAST)

Okay we had and still have quite a bit of thunder and lightning activity this afternoon in Mossel Bay. The above chart reflects the Temperature/Humidity and Barometer/Windspeed gragh from the SAWDOS Weather Station. Have a look at the steep fall (34 Deg/C to 24 Deg/C in 10 minutes time) in temperature just after 14h00 this afternoon. The wind changed from NW to W/SW and the baro started to rise. The humidity shot up from 30% to 98% (two hours time.)  Soon afterwards thunderstorms and lighting started to become active.  At 17h30 we experience a severe lightning strike which tripped the power in my home.  The lightning an thunder is still active at 18h09 SAST.

Once again severe thunderstorms and lightning strikes for Mossel Bay.  Thunderstorms occur maybe twice a year in the Mossel Bay area, but this year we already had a few thunderstorms including a severe thunderstorm on the 24 March 2012. .  A severe thunderstorm caused hundreds of thousands rand of damage in the area when lightning hit the Life Bayview Hospital.  The roof of the hospital and medical equipment were damage while an electricity substation was completely destroyed.  Abnormal weather for Mossel Bay?  Yes, definitely.   The Southern Cape seems to be a draw card for severe weather events the last couple of years.  We there for need to  keep an eye on the weather in the Southern Cape.
